This is due to FGM (Female Genital Mutilation)—once the girls are mutilated, they are considered women and are ready for marriage. The number of students also drops from around the age of 10, as they are then expected to care for the animals.

The absenteeism rate is high for several reasons:

Illness, especially among younger children

The need to tend to their parents’ animals, particularly during droughts

The long distance to school

Lack of food at home

The school’s water supply is dependent on rainfall. Due to the ongoing drought, which has lasted for more than four years, the parents are required to pay for water. However, given that many families are already struggling with the loss of their animals and the ongoing famine, this has become almost impossible for them.

Mperrishi Primary School does not have a school feeding program to ensure that the children receive food at school. Pupils often arrive hungry, thirsty, and tired after a long journey to school without breakfast. This is another challenge for the teachers.

At the moment, many pupils do not attend school because they are searching for a plant whose seeds are eaten by goats, and the bitter-tasting plant is chewed by people to quench their thirst.

The WeCare-Association has been involved with Mperrishi since 2021. We have repaired one of the two existing water tanks and purchased two additional 5,000-liter tanks. Since the beginning of 2023, the school has been receiving 20,000 liters of water every month. Since we’ve been supplying both water and food regularly, the number of students attending school consistently has increased.

The inhabitants of Mperrishi are members of the Maasai tribe, who are traditionally herders and live off cattle breeding. A large proportion of the population consists of women and children, as the Maasai still practice polygamy, with men marrying up to 10 women. Birth control is not practiced. There are about 500 bomas (traditional mud huts) in the area.

There is no medical care in Mperrishi. The nearest health center is 20 km away.

Drought in Mperrishi

Broken water tap on the tank

Girls are happy about beans that have fallen out of a sack.

We are currently the only organization that regularly brings water and food to the area and raises awareness about FGM.

Keren Gitonga with Sylvia S.

Group photo with “our” girls

S.
